Cybersecurity and data protection

Cybersecurity and data protection are central to protecting digital systems and data in an interconnected world. Accreditation ensures that security assessments are carried out reliably, independently and to internationally recognised standards – creating trust, minimising risks and strengthening secure digital and AI-based applications.

Overview

The cybersecurity, information security and data protection scope encompasses all measures that reliably protect digital information, IT systems and communications infrastructure. It is essential for functioning digital services, stable infrastructures and the responsible use of new technologies – including artificial intelligence. As digitalisation, connectivity and automation increase, so too do the associated risks: cyberattacks, data loss, system failures and the misuse of sensitive data can cause considerable economic and social harm. Cybersecurity and data protection provide the foundation for trust and the protection of users' rights.

Role of accreditation

Accreditation ensures that conformity assessments in the field of digital security are carried out competently, independently and in accordance with internationally recognised requirements. Accredited conformity assessment bodies test, evaluate and confirm the conformity of management systems, products, processes and services – providing a reliable basis for secure digital infrastructures and the protection of information and data.

Accreditation is also a key instrument in the field of artificial intelligence. In Europe, safety-relevant conformity assessments for AI systems may only be carried out by appropriately recognised bodies. While Switzerland does not have dedicated AI legislation, accreditation ensures that assessments of AI systems are compatible with international frameworks and accepted in the market.

Accreditation thus supports public authorities, businesses and manufacturers in meeting regulatory requirements, minimising digital risks and building trust in digital and AI-based applications.

Importance for the public, businesses and public authorities

Accreditation strengthens the security of digital devices, applications and services and protects personal data in the interests of the public.
