Biobanks are facilities that provide biological materials – such as human, animal, plant or microbial samples – together with their associated data, for research and development. ISO 20387 sets out requirements for staff competence and for the reliability, traceability and fitness for purpose of biological material and the data generated from it.

Accredited biobanks cover all phases of the biological material lifecycle and associated data management: from collection, where applicable, or acquisition or receipt, through to distribution, disposal or destruction.

Accredited biobanks demonstrate that they provide fit-for-purpose biological material and associated data of defined, reproducible quality, in an ethically sound manner, for research and development purposes.
