Accreditation to ISO/IEC 17065 guarantees professional, impartial and transparent assessments. Tests, inspections or audits result in reliable certifications that build trust among customers, authorities and consumers.
A certification body for products, processes and services is an independent and expert conformity assessment body (CAB) that verifies whether a product, process or service meets specified requirements. This is based on the international standard ISO/IEC 17065, which the CAB must use to define its management system and processes for conformity assessment by a third party.
The aim of certification is to build trust: customers, authorities and consumers can rely on the fact that certified products, processes or services meet the requirements of the certification programmes, including the relevant standards, technical specifications or legal requirements. To this end, the certification body objectively assesses conformity using tests, inspections, audits or a combination of these procedures, depending on the specific certification programme.
Based on this assessment, the certification body makes an independent decision on whether to grant, maintain, extend or withdraw certification and issues the corresponding certificates or – where applicable – conformity mark. Certification often also involves regular monitoring to demonstrate continued compliance with the requirements.
Key requirements of the standard are impartiality, professional competence in line with the requirements of the certification programmes, transparency, confidentiality and a clear separation between consultancy and certification. In this way, certification plays an important role in ensuring security, quality and trust in the national and international markets.
