A proficiency testing provider compares the results of multiple participants under standardised conditions. Accreditation to ISO/IEC 17043 ensures objective, reliable assessments, helps demonstrate competence and improve procedures, and creates trust and international recognition.
A proficiency testing provider organises interlaboratory comparisons in which the results of multiple participants – who carry out the same measurement, testing, calibration or inspection task under defined conditions – are compared with one another. This gives participants feedback on how reliable and accurate their results are relative to those of others.
By meeting the requirements of ISO/IEC 17043, a proficiency testing provider ensures that proficiency testing programmes are competently planned, organised, conducted and evaluated; that the samples used are fit for purpose, homogeneous and stable; and that the statistical evaluation methods applied yield impartial and objective performance assessments for participants.
Proficiency testing demonstrates competence, validates and improves procedures, and helps meet regulatory or accreditation-related requirements. Accredited proficiency testing providers play an important role in ensuring the validity and comparability of results and the international recognition of conformity assessment bodies, fostering trust and continuous improvement.
