Digitalisation in the NRP

Digitalisation offers significant opportunities for the target areas of the New Regional Policy (NRP). It is once again a key focus area for the 2024–2027 period. The NRP aims to facilitate more digitalisation projects and to further raise awareness and strengthen networking amongst regional stakeholders. In this way, the NRP is effectively driving forward the digital transformation in the regions.

In its 2024–2031 multi-annual programme, the NRP continues to place a focus on digitalisation. In doing so, it contributes to the implementation of the ‘Digital Switzerland’ strategy and the federal government’s tourism strategy. The cantonal NRP programmes aim to support more digitalisation projects and intensify cooperation in the field of digitalisation, including between sectors and across national borders. In addition to digitalisation projects within the two funding priorities of tourism and industry / RIS, regions may also designate the ‘digital economy’ as a separate funding priority.

Digitalisation is creating new opportunities, enabling new business and working models, and improving connectivity. The NRP supports this development and promotes, for example, the development of digital services, shared platform solutions and pilot projects, as well as the establishment and expansion of digital skills and partnerships in the regions.

Raising awareness and building networks

For projects to be successful and have an impact, knowledge, exchange and strong partners are essential. In collaboration with the knowledge and networking platform regiosuisse, the NRP provides regional stakeholders with information on digitalisation topics – via its website and the Digitalisation dossier (available in German, French and Italian). Events and networking opportunities bring stakeholders together and promote the transfer of knowledge.

Digital Switzerland Strategy

The Digital Switzerland Strategy sets out the direction in which Switzerland’s digital transformation is to develop and the priorities set by the Federal Council. On 12 December 2025, the Federal Council updated the strategy for 2026.

The strategy sets out that the federal government aims to create the most favourable possible framework conditions for digital business models and innovation, so that the potential of digitalisation can be realised. Cities and municipalities, rural areas and mountain regions are set to benefit from this development. This approach underpins the NRP’s focus on digitalisation. The NRP contributes to the implementation of the strategy by funding projects in its target areas, strengthening cooperation and actively supporting the digital transition.

Promoting activities: Seizing the opportunities offered by digitalisation

The NRP is part of the Confederation's promotion activities. It supports SMEs and regions across Switzerland in seizing the opportunities offered by digitalisation and remaining competitive. To this end, it funds projects, strengthens partnerships and helps to bring knowledge and innovation to the regions. In this way, the NRP helps to ensure that the digital transformation succeeds even outside the major centres and that new value is created.
