Information to the Free Trade Agreement
The free trade agreement between the EFTA states and Chile entered into force on 1 December 2004. In 2024, the EFTA states and Chile concluded negotiations to modernise this agreement, which entered into force on 1 June 2026.
The modernised agreement means that virtually all Swiss exports to Chile will be exempt from customs duties (99.99%). Financial services are now also covered.
In addition, the agreement has been supplemented with provisions on SMEs and e-commerce, while the rules of origin have been brought up to date. The agreement now guarantees protection for important Swiss geographical indications (GIs) and covers all intellectual property rights and their enforcement. A comprehensive and ambitious chapter on trade and sustainable development has also been added.
The modernisation transforms the agreement into a state-of-the-art, highly ambitious free trade agreement.
