Within the frame of the EFTA, Switzerland has started negotiations of a free trade agreement with Canada in June 1998. Negotiations were concluded successfully on 18th January 2008 and the competent ministers signed the treaty on 28th January 2008. It was put in force on 1st July, 2009.
The free trade agreement mainly covers the trade in goods and agricultural products. However, it also contains a general article with an evolutionary clause on Services and Investments (Art. 12 and Record of Understanding), another on Temporary Entry for natural persons (Art. 13 and Record of Understanding) as well as provisions on the Cultural Industries (Art. 23, Annex J and Record of Understanding).
