Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin attends the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Centenary Conference

Bern, 18.06.2019 - Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin, head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER), gave a speech on the future of work and social partnership at the ILO’s Centenary Conference. He also signed a declaration of intent with the Indonesian Minister of Manpower.

In his speech, Mr Parmelin welcomed Switzerland’s presidency of the conference and the country’s support for the ILO centenary. He told conference delegates that ‘investment in education and training is essential for managing the opportunities and risks posed by digitalisation and new forms of work’. He also called for social partnership to serve the needs of both training and the economy.

During his bilateral meeting with Indonesia’s Minister of Manpower, Muhammad Hanif Dhakiri, Mr Parmelin signed a bilateral declaration of intent on labour and employment issues which aims to complement the free trade agreement. On 22 May, the Federal Council approved the dispatch on this comprehensive agreement concluded between the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states and Indonesia, and submitted it to Parliament for adoption.

The 108th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) is taking place in Geneva from 10 to 21 June. It marks the centenary of the founding of the ILO, and aims to adopt a declaration on the future of work and the role of the ILO, as well as a new standard concerning the fight against violence and harassment at work.
