Increased cooperation with the IMF in support of developing countries

Bern, 11.11.2015 - The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO is stepping-up Swiss cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in developing countries with CHF 24 million over the coming five years.

The Federal Council decided on 11.11.2015 to finance IMF technical support programmes in developing countries over the coming five years. -. In renewing its support to the IMF, SECO can continue to provide recipients with flexible technical support tailored to their needs in key economic areas. The IMF is one of the most important global providers of advisory services on economic policy. Working closely with the IMF brings Switzerland considerable added value and consolidates its profile among the international lending institutions.

Technical support from the IMF has in the past contributed to improving economic stability in developing countries. The projects have helped establish functioning, efficient and effective systems for managing public finances and contributed to the development of a stable and productive financial sector.

The focus for the future will remain on improving economic governance in central banks, economic ministries and other institutions tasked with managing public finances and regulating financial markets in developing countries. This will in turn promote economic stability and encourage sustainable growth in these countries.
